Mac OS on Intel

| | Comments (3)

After my miserable time driving back to Minneapolis from Iowa, I decided to "nerd it up" as a way of relaxing. Normally this means writing some half-baked program idea, but this past weekend I decided to play with operating systems. In particular install Mac OS X on my Intel based laptop. The short story is I got it to work for a short period of time, but broke this install shortly after.

OS X x86

Given that my laptop hardware did not support the x86 version of OS X well, I didn't feel like taking the time to reinstall. Instead, I plan on installing Fedora and possibly Windows Vista... and that's my rant of nerdom.

Bus Biking

For anyone who finds riding a stationary exercise bike too boring because the view doesn't change, but does not like to be outside, there is a new concept from the creative country of Brazil. The idea: Bus Biking. You ride your stationary exercise bike inside a bus as it drives along the beach. FUN!

The Nerd Inside

| | Comments (0)

For all my friends out there who have forgot how much of a nerd I am and for those who haven't, I thought I might post a couple nerdy tidbits for you...

  • If you are a nerd, have some time to kill, and have a decent Internet connection ("porn pipe"), check out Nerd TV. In his show, Robert X. Cringely interviews well known technologists (nerds) about their lives and work in all this technology stuff. Thanks Steve for pointing this out

  • A friend of mine, Stu, sent me a link to this rather interesting piece of software developed by Microsoft and Cornell University: VirtualWiFi. It creates multiple virtual wireless network adapters on one physical one, allowing you to connect to multiple wireless networks at the same time. It supports Ad Hoc networks as well which would allow you to bridge virtual connections. Neat stuff... if you don't understand why, you probably don't care.

  • My current project is using a Java framework called Spring. It provides an architecture for aspect oriented programming (AOP) and inversion of control (IOC) otherwise known as dependency injection. Recently they have developed a .NET version called Spring.NET which I have been trying out. If you are working on a piece of software that you would like to keep extremely flexible, I highly recommend you check this out.

Windows Security Flaw

| | Comments (3) | TrackBacks (0)

A major flaw in a common component of Microsoft Windows was released today along with a security patch. I say this is a major flaw because it allows an attacker complete control of a targeted system. The folks at eEye who discovered the flaw also wrote a nice little rhyme to the beat of MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" in this article...

U Can't Trust This By: MCSE Hammer

Blaster did ya some harm
We just say, hey, another worm
But thank you, for trusting me
To mind your site's security
It's all good, when your server's downed
Our dope PR will pass blame around
Cuz it's known as such
That this is some software, you can't trust

I told ya Homeland
U can't trust this
Yeah that's why we're giving ya the code
U can't trust this
Check out eEye, man
U can't trust this
Yo let 'em bust more funky system
U can't trust this

Give 'em a string or recvfrom
Like no sweat they got the keys to your kingdom
Now ya know
You talk about eEye, you're talking about holes
Remote and tight
Coders still sweating so someone better write
A book to learn
What it's gonna take in '04
To earn some trust
Legit, either secure or ya might as well quit

That's the word because you know
U can't trust this
U can't trust this

Breakin' in

Stop -- eEye time

New Search Engine

| | Comments (6)

If you remember the days when Yahoo was the number one search engine, you may appreciate the new search engine Vivisimo. Like the days of Yahoo, you can browse search results by category, but instead of the categories being predefined, the categories are defined by the results. This is definately an interesting way to search.
