Other than the extremely long bus ride (8-10hrs from Lima), Huaraz was my favourite city on our trip. We stayed in a great hostel, Caroline, at 10 soles/night/person (~$3) in a little girl's bedroom, decorated pink with stuffed animals to make us feel at home.
The main adventure for us in Huaraz was a day trek to a lake named Laguna 69. We started the hike after a 3 hr bus ride at a height of 3,850m (~12,600ft) up to the lake that sits at a height of 4,400m (~14,400ft). The color of the lake is a bright royal blue that looks quite out of place beneath the glacier capped peaks behind it. Overall, the entire hike took about 3 hrs to up and 2 hours down.
Our last day in Huaraz was mainly spent relaxing after our big climb the day before. We explored a few ancient Inca ruins dating back to around 1100AD and prepared for our long night bus ride back to Lima to catch a flight to Cuzco.
